March is mapping month!  Each week I’ll share a mapping-themed activity for you to try out at home or in your favorite location.  This week’s activity is inspired by Hannah Hinchman, from her book A Trail Through Leaves.

A page full of hand-drawn sketches connected by a dotted line. Some of the sketches include a tree, a wooden bridge, a headland, and a sea anemone.

Are you the kind of person who likes to keep track of things?  I am.  I have a habit tracker to (you guessed it) track my habits, I record rainfall and high/low temperatures every day, and I capture phenological changes with my camera.  I love information, or data.  My favorite method for displaying data are maps.  There is so much information stored in these communication tools!  And it was through my love of maps that I discovered the variety of ways they can be used to record and share information.

This month the “Friday Sessions” are going to explore the theme of “mapping.”  Each week will have a different take on the concept.  We’ll start with “event mapping.”
